Egypt offered Gaza electricity in exchange for security coordination

UN condemns Hamas for tunnel under schools in Gaza

"They [Hamas] receive support from Qatar and have received aid from other countries in the past, but they usually choose to put the funds towards building up infrastructure towards terrorism", Erdan said. In an interview with the BBC's Arabic service, Mordechai said, "Israel is forced to reduce the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip".

The request from PA President Mahmoud Abbas is part of escalating tensions between his Fatah faction and Hamas, which runs Gaza.

A month ago, Mordechai warned global aid organizations operating in the Gaza Strip that they had to prepare for the possibility that Israel would gradually cut of the power supply to the territory.

The Israeli cabinet's approval of a 40 percent reduction in electricity supply to the besieged Gaza Strip, where Palestinians are coping with a crippling power crisis and daily hours-long blackouts, hit the front page headlines in the Tuesday Palestinian dailies.

Last week, Egypt has cut its diplomatic ties with Qatar, citing several reasons including the latter's support to Hamas.

Qatar, now facing a blockade led by Saudi Arabia, is not in a position to back Hamas as it did during the previous Gaza war in the summer of 2014, while Iran and Hamas are only at the stage of "rekindling their ties", Schanzer told The Algemeiner.

The problem is that Hamas may be secure, no matter how bad things get, but Israel isn't.

It said that there is no difference between crimes committed in Mosul by ISIS and those committed in Gaza by Hamas, as "Hamas uses the Palestinians in Gaza as human shield".

"Should Israeli citizens pay the electric bill of the residents of Gaza?"

Egypt's list of demands included that Hamas hand over 17 men wanted by Cairo on terror charges, the end of weapons smuggling into Sinai, greater security at the border and intelligence on tunnel movements into Gaza, Asharq al-Awsat reported. Even with this smaller cut, Israeli military advisers are warning a mounting humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip will likely escalate the level of violence along the Israeli border.

For decades, Israeli officials have claimed that without UNRWA providing for the needs of the Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Israel would be held responsible. The new cuts would reduce the supply to between two and three hours a day. That's because the ruling power, Hamas, refused to purchase fuel from the Palestinian Authority, forcing the enclave's only power plant to shut down.

But Israel is deluding itself if it believes it can shun responsibility for what happens in Gaza.

"The decision of the occupation to reduce the electricity to Gaza at the request of PA President Mahmoud Abbas is catastrophic and unsafe". Although the Trump administration eventually decided against moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, the open contemplation of such a move would suggest tacit support of Israel's policies and alienates Palestinians.
