Last week, Egypt has cut its diplomatic ties with Qatar, citing several reasons including the latter's support to Hamas.

Qatar, now facing a blockade led by Saudi Arabia, is not in a position to back Hamas as it did during the previous Gaza war in the summer of 2014, while Iran and Hamas are only at the stage of "rekindling their ties", Schanzer told The Algemeiner.

The problem is that Hamas may be secure, no matter how bad things get, but Israel isn't.

It said that there is no difference between crimes committed in Mosul by ISIS and those committed in Gaza by Hamas, as "Hamas uses the Palestinians in Gaza as human shield".

Egypt's list of demands included that Hamas hand over 17 men wanted by Cairo on terror charges, the end of weapons smuggling into Sinai, greater security at the border and intelligence on tunnel movements into Gaza, Asharq al-Awsat reported. Even with this smaller cut, Israeli military advisers are warning a mounting humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip will likely escalate the level of violence along the Israeli border.

For decades, Israeli officials have claimed that without UNRWA providing for the needs of the Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Israel would be held responsible. The new cuts would reduce the supply to between two and three hours a day. That's because the ruling power, Hamas, refused to purchase fuel from the Palestinian Authority, forcing the enclave's only power plant to shut down.

But Israel is deluding itself if it believes it can shun responsibility for what happens in Gaza.

"The decision of the occupation to reduce the electricity to Gaza at the request of PA President Mahmoud Abbas is catastrophic and unsafe". Although the Trump administration eventually decided against moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, the open contemplation of such a move would suggest tacit support of Israel's policies and alienates Palestinians.
