Readers respond to Comey's testimony

Trump-james comey

In stunning public testimony last week, James Comey acknowledged arranging for a friend to leak details of a conversation Comey had with President Trump - the February 14 Oval Office encounter in which Trump said he hoped the FBI director could "drop" the bureau's investigation of fired national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to Comey's contemporaneous notes.

I can not fathom how intimidated Mr. Comey must have been alone in a room with President Trump.

Asked if he would make that denial under oath, he said: "100%".

He added: "I would be glad to tell him exactly what I just told you", reports CNN.

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday that the Trump administration's characterizations of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and his work there as a justification for his firing were "lies, plain and simple".

A defiant President Donald Trump on Friday accused former FBI Director James Comey of committing perjury in his blockbuster Senate testimony and said he was willing to share his version of events under oath with the special counsel overseeing the expanding Russian Federation investigation.

Trump held his news conference alongside the visiting president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, who lavished praise on his American host.

Meanwhile, a congressional panel asked for any tapes of their conversations. At 8:26 a.m. on Friday, May 12, Trump wrote: "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

Almost 20 million United States television viewers tuned in to the explosive televised testimony. Comey told senators he believed Trump fired him because of the Russian Federation investigation.

He asserted that nothing in Mr Comey's testimony to the Senate pointed to collusion with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice. The committee is seeking the materials by June 23.

John McCain, R-Arizona, who wanted to know why Comey wouldn't publicly clear Trump of wrongdoing even though he had done so for Hillary Clinton.

Comey was unabashed about accusing Trump and his administration of telling "lies", and said he began the practice of immediately making notes after talking with the president because "I was honestly concerned that he might lie" about the conversations.

"No collusion, no obstruction, he's a leaker, but we want to get back to running our great country", Trump said.

Though Republicans worked to discredit Mr Comey and to blunt the impact of his testimony, the ex-director's statement deepened questions about the basis for his May 9 dismissal and about whether President Trump's actions constituted obstruction of justice.

The committee also sent a letter to Mr Comey asking for any notes or memos about the discussions he had with Mr Trump before being abruptly fired last month.

Bharara says Trump called him twice before the inauguration, to "shoot the breeze".

"One hundred percent", Trump said.

He said people would know about it very soon.

During much of the increasingly heated debate surrounding the FBI's investigation of Russia's role in the election, Trump has chafed over news leaks, arguing that news organizations had not given them proper attention.

He also seized on Mr Comey's revelation that he had directed a friend to release contents of memos he'd written documenting his conversations with the president to a reporter.

In the Clinton impeachment case, the House of Representatives dropped an article on obstruction of justice, said Turley, who testified before the House in favor of impeachment.

The president had previewed his attacks against Comey in an early-morning tweet that broke his previous day's silence on his favorite social media megaphone.
