UK's May cracks joke about election disaster

British Prime Minister Theresa May

The Conservatives are still negotiating with the Democratic Unionist Party over whether their 10 MPs will support the Tories' minority government.

A deal with the DUP also risks destabilising Northern Ireland by increasing the influence of pro-British unionists.

She later joined MPs in the House of Commons, where opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn arrived to applause from his fellow lawmakers.

"I think it's very self-interested, putting party before peace in Northern Ireland - party interest before peace and stability in Northern Ireland - and I do think it's that serious".

The Conservative source said talks with the small Northern Irish party were progressing well as meetings in Downing Street with all of the British province's main political leaders got underway.

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said last Friday that Brussels would be ready "at half past nine" the next morning if Britain was ready.

May's botched election gamble left her so diminished that supporters of closer ties with the European Union publicly demanded that she take a more consensual and business friendly approach to Brexit.

The former prime minister, who began work engaging with the IRA to end the Northern Ireland conflict, said the peace process was still "fragile" and cautioned the pact could mean the Government will no longer be seen as impartial.

The Conservatives are considering an arrangement in which the Northern Ireland party backs May on the budget and her confidence motions.

However a deal for Downing Street could be close, as a new date has been set for the opening of the United Kingdom parliament.

After more than an hour of talks between Mrs May and DUP leader Arlene Foster on Tuesday, Mrs May said the discussion had been productive.

Mrs Foster said: "There's been a lot of commentary around the issues that we are talking about and it won't surprise anyone that we are talking about matters that pertain, of course, to the nation generally".

The BBC reported that a deal with the DUP was expected to be signed on Wednesday. Their worry is that it may make the negotiations a little skewed as it may feel like the British government is backing the DUP in talks rather than being objective.

Negotiations between the two parties have failed so far to yield an agreement, raising the possibility of a delayed Queen's Speech, which details May's legislative agenda.

'It's going to be hard, there's no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it, ' Cameron was reported by the FT as saying at a conference in Poland on Tuesday. But even if that game goes into extra time, European Union leaders are making clear to May that there can be no extension to the two-year period of negotiation before Britain must leave Europe in March 2019.
