Alberta fighter Tim Hague dies following boxing match in Edmonton

Alberta MMA fighter and boxer Tim Hague

The world of combat sports in undoubtedly a unsafe one and anyone who enters this sport is risking their life and that was the case for former UFC heavyweight star Tim Hague.

Keeping fans up to date with Hague's progress, his friend and fellow MMA fighter Cody Krahn took to Facebook to issue a brief statement, which was later deleted.

The 34-year-old's head bounced off the canvas in sickening fashion, and he laid motionless before the referee waved off the fight.

Hague, a five-fight UFC veteran, had been in critical condition in a Canadian hospital after his knockout loss to former Edmonton Eskimos football player Adam Braidwood at Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Hague switched codes to fight Braidwood, 33, on Friday night, and was sent crashing to the canvas following a flurry of shots in the second round.

Reports of Hague's death proved to be premature as his sister said he is now in critical condition. "He was surrounded by family, listening to his favorite songs. We will miss him with so greatly", Neil wrote.

The Edmonton Combative Sports Commission, which regulates professional combative sports events in the city, has not responded to emails or calls this weekend.

Hague's family released a statement regarding his passing on Sunday afternoon.

A heavyweight trained in jiu-jitsu, Hague put his teaching career on hold to make his pro MMA debut in 2006. He compiled a 21-13 MMA record before switching to boxing.

ORIGINAL STORY: 4:55 a.m.

Tim Hague is now in the hospital and his condition is critical.

Neil said in her statement that Hague's immediate family is now with him, and that they are asking for prayers and privacy at this terrible and hard time.
