First day of summer is today in St

The Met Office says: "At the summer solstice, the sun reaches its highest point of the year, while at the winter solstice, the noon sun is the lowest it will be all year". While the summer solstice technically happens on Wednesday at 12:24 a.m. ET, it's Tuesday that's getting that blissful extra bit of sunlight.

Today is the first day of summer for the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones along with Alaska and Hawaii.

It actually signals the moment the sun's path stops moving northward in the sky, and the start of days becoming steadily shorter as the slow march to winter begins.

It was the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes of Cyrene who first calculated the Earth's circumference based on the sun's alignment on the solstice, as author and Guardian columnist Dr. Stuart Clark points out.

As for the sunrise and sunset, it is nearly entirely dependent on time zone.

So what is the summer solstice, exactly? The further north one moves from the equator, the more light one receives during the summer solstice.

This tilt allows for different seasons to occur because as the Earth revolves around the sun, heating is displaced.

The summer solstice can occur anywhere from June 20 to June 22 because of differences between the Gregorian calendar and the solar calendar. That's 15-hours, 22-minutes and 25-seconds of daylight, according TimeAndDate.com.

Right now, the sun is visible all day long north of the Arctic Circle, while Antarctica is trapped in one long night.

In the southern hemisphere the dates of the two solstices are reversed.

The first day of summer nearly always falls on June 20 or 21.
