Oilers trade F Jordan Eberle to Islanders for C Ryan Strome

Returning to the postseason past year for the first time since their Stanley Cup Final loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, the Oilers' are now looking to catapult their franchise back into the limelight by regaining their championship form. Given that he has a $6 million annual cap hit for another two seasons, that offensive decline was problematic. Playing alongside someone who can set the table as well as Tavares, there's a realistic chance for Eberle to get back into that 30-goal range with the Islanders. If the two mesh well in 2017-18 then Eberle could see a significant spike in production, possibly to the point where he returns to the 60-70 point range.

The 23-year-old Strome disappointed in his third full National Hockey League season, recording 13 goals and 30 points along with a minus-8 rating.

Eberle, 27, is coming off a 20-goal, 51-point season, his seventh since Edmonton drafted him 22nd overall in 2008.

The Islanders also have to be thrilled to get a prime scorer to help convince Tavares to stay in NY. He's scored 45 goals and 126 points in 258 career games with the Islanders. Scoring at least 20 goals in every season since his rookie year, with the exception of his 16 goals in 48 games in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, Eberle will be a big help to the Islanders' offensive gameplan. The key number is the $2.5-million salary, though, for one more season. It costs them to do it, but Eberle fills a need and the investment is reasonable considering that he is likely to have better percentages next year. "He brings speed and a knack for scoring not only consistently, but scoring big goals, in big games".

In that sense, regardless of what Strome produces in Edmonton, this looks to be a deal that can work for both sides.

Beginning July 1, Snow can begin negotiations on a long-term contract extension with Tavares, hoping to prevent one of the best players in franchise history from departing following next season. That's all well and good, because cap space matters, but it only matters if it gets used, and how it's used. Edmonton also plays in 11 back-to-back games this season and 10 afternoon games.
