Cable auto in Kashmir falls to ground; 5 people killed, hundreds stranded

The deceased have been identified as Mukhtar Ahmed (local guide), Jayant Andraskar (Deceased), Manshea Andraskar (Wife of the deceased) and their two daughters Janhvi and Anagha.

"Seven people, including four from a Delhi family have been killed in the accident", a police officer said. The Andraskar family lived in Shalimar Bagh in Delhi. "Rescue work is going on", an official of the J&K Cable Car Corporation told The Kashmir Monitor.

The cable auto service of Gulmarg is hugely popular and draws thousands of people in summer. The three local residents who died included two tourist guides. The cable vehicle fell hundreds of meters down to the ground, resulting in the death of 5 tourists.

The accident happened due to the heavy winds which uprooted the tree which later fell on ropes between tower number 7 to 8 of the cable auto project.

Hussain said gusty winds in the area uprooted a huge pine tree that hit the cable of the coach, bringing it down to the ground.

As per former Chief Minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah's tweet (@abdullah_omar) this is first-of-its-kind accident in the valley. She announced ex gratia relief of Rs. five lakh in favour of next of kin of those killed. It is the world's second highest operating cable vehicle project that can ferry 600 people in one hour.

"What awful news", he tweeted. "That's a laid down SOP (standard operating procedure)", he said. The two-stage Gondola ferries about 600 people per hour to and from Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of nearby 13,780-feet-high Afarwat Peak.
