NJ college: Professor fired for racially insensitive remarks

Black NJ College Professor Lisa Durden Fired For Defending Black Lives Matter Party On Tucker Carlson

Lisa Durden, an adjunct professor of communications at Essex County College in New Jersey, was sacked after remarks made to Tucker Carlson on Fox News defending a Memorial Day party hosted by a NY chapter of Black Lives Matter and intended for "blacks-only".

She said, however, that it was brought up earlier that day in a meeting with college vice president Jeffrey Lee and assistant director of Human Resources Karen Bridgett.

'The character of this institution mandates that we embrace diversity, inclusion, and unity.

During their tense exchange, Carlson said Durden was "demented".

"Black Lives Matter made a decision to have one day where they didn't want white folks who were going to be off the rails", Durden said.

Prof Durden's comments drew the ire of Fox News' predominantly conservative audience, and became enough of a talking point on campus that some students expressed their "frustration, concern and even fear" over her ability to teach them.

She addressed the school board in a public meeting on June 20 and was sacked shortly thereafter, according to NJ.com.

Durden - who began her first semester of teaching at the school in January - was wrapping up the first summer session of classes and was already scheduled for the fall semester. When Carlson confronted Durden about the blacks-only celebration, Durden mocked: "Boo-hoo-hoo, you white people are angry because you couldn't use your "white privilege" card to get invited to the Black Lives Matter's all-black Memorial Day celebration!"

But Durden said the firing was unjust and baseless. "Racism can not be fought with more racism", Munroe wrote in a statement announcing Durden's firing.

"The College affirms its right to select employees who represent the institution appropriately and are aligned with our mission", he added.

Just days after her firing, the ousted professor told NJ.com on Friday that she'd received an overwhelming amount of support from fellow staff members and students, and likened her predicament to a rape victim who ultimately gets blamed for the crime.

The incendiary nature of the issues involved make this a close call, but how far should we go in defending free speech?

During an interview on "Tucker Carlson Tonight", Professor Lisa Durden endorsed the event, which was held exclusively for black people, telling the news host that white people were upset because they could use their "white privilege card" to attend.

"I had a right to free speech, and I exercised that right", Durden said.

Durden and her attorney, Leslie Farber, are taking legal action over her firing, NJ.com reported. "I thought when I came home from war, I would be safe." but "I was sacked".
