Airline vet to lead Amtrak in a summer of repairs, reckoning

Veteran airline executive Richard Anderson will replace Moorman as CEO officials said

Moorman said Anderson, 62, is a "superlative" leader and told Politico that they'll be serving together because, "The one thing he doesn't know is the railroad business, which obviously is my background". After that period, Moorman will continue to serve Amtrak in an advisory capacity, although those details are still being worked out, Moorman said in an interview.

Anderson, who retired previous year after a decade at the helm of Delta, will start at Amtrak on July 12.

To facilitate a smooth transition of power, Amtrak says Anderson and current CEO Wick Moorman will serve as Co-CEOs until the end of the year - at which point Moorman will step down and become an advisor to the company. In 2018, he expects to remain affiliated with Amtrak as an adviser. Before taking Amtrak's top job, Moorman was the longtime head of Norfolk Southern Railway.

"This is particularly unacceptable given the enormous payments made by our states to Amtrak to assure the state of good fix of Penn Station", Cuomo said.

Leading Delta for nine years, Anderson transformed the airline after its exit from bankruptcy into a leader in profitability.

While lacking railroad experience, Anderson has an extensive background as an executive.

Anderson, 62, was Delta's CEO from 2007 to past year and served in the same capacity at Northwest Airlines before that.

He will join Amtrak on July 12. Before that he was a county prosecutor.

The Trump administration in May proposed ending $630 million in subsidies for Amtrak to operate long-distance train service, out of $1.4 billion in annual government support for passenger rail service. "We look forward to working with Richard and welcoming him to the AAR Board of Directors".

"Amtrak is a great company today, and I'm excited about using my experience and working with the board to make it even better", he said.

"I'm passionate about building strong businesses that create the best travel experience possible for customers", Anderson said in a statement.

"What you get with a Richard Anderson is a corporate leader", Moorman said.

Anderson earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Houston at Clear Lake City and a juris doctorate at South Texas College of Law.
