Germany through to U-21 Euros semis despite Italy defeat

For Aidy Boothroyd the frustration is still raw.

Welcome to our live, minute-by-minute coverage of the European U21 Championship semi-final between England and Germany from Tychy Stadium in Poland.

The Young Lions go into the game in Tychy protecting a remarkable record that has seen England's assorted youth sides go unbeaten during normal time in 20 competitive matches this year, with the only blemish the Under-17s' defeat by Spain on penalties in last month's European Championship final. Both players were withdrawn during England's final group match, a 3-0 win over Poland.

It was a welcome boost for the Young Lions and they received another after just two minutes when Germany's penalty claims were somehow rejected. "This is the sort of issue that we have". "We had a real go and we didn't play at our best. You've got to make these opportunities count".

The Germans beat England on penalties and went on to win the tournament.

"We have got to get young English players used to being successful in tournaments".

Germany dominated possession in the extra-periods but struggled to create many clear-cut chances as England camped inside their penalty box.

Of the semi-finalists here England's squad accumulated half as many top-flight minutes for their respective clubs last season.

This time it will be different, they said. "That's the image I want to give off".

He added: "I think at this point, despite being really down about things, after a little period of reflection I think everybody connected with the team can be really pleased". If that ever meant becoming a captain at national level, that would be a dream come true. This time it's Abraham who gets on the end of a freekick, but he could only head straight at Pollersbeck.

"What we want to do now is get to the latter stages, and next time we'll get there; we need to be winning finals, like we've done with the Under-20s - and I'm sure we'll do that".

Redmond and Chalobah took part in England's final training session near Krakow on Monday and are in line to start if they prove they have recovered from injuries that forced them to be substituted in the 3-0 victory over Poland in their last match. After going to penalties at 2-2, we all knew they were doomed and so it was nearly fate when Chelsea's Tammy Abraham and Southampton's Nathan Redmond were denied to hand victory to the Germans.

The only stumbling block appears to be what to expect from their opponents, who were disappointing in their final group match against Italy but would be unsafe to underestimate at the business end of any tournament. Boothroyd feels his players have unfinished business.
