Bernie Sanders-Wife-Investigation story

Sanders' Wife Under FBI Probe for Real Estate Deal

Host Erin Burnett ends the segment asking if Jane Sanders is under investigation, which Bernie does not answer (possibly under the advice of counsel), but that hasn't stopped conservatives from suggesting that Sanders is stonewalling (the above YouTube clip titled "Bernie Sanders Won't Answer Whether He Or His Wife Are Under FBI Investigation" comes from user GOP War Room) and that this story isn't going away.

Burnett then tried to ask Sanders her question about whether he knew about the FBI investigation into his wife, but Sanders yelled over her.

The federal investigation was, in part, set into motion in 2016 by Brady Toensing, who was a leader in President Donald Trump's election campaign.

Jane Sanders was once the president of Burlington College, a small liberal arts institution that shuttered previous year after failing to stabilize its finances.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, of Vermont on Tuesday defended his wife, Jane Sanders, former president of now-defunct Burlington College, from bank fraud allegations over a $10-million loan application sought by Ms. Sanders in 2011 to purchase 33 acres of land for the liberal arts institution.

Burnett followed up again and asked Sanders whether he had any knowledge of the FBI investigating his wife. A person close to the senator said Sanders was represented by Rich Cassidy, a longtime lawyer for the family.

In the interview on Tuesday, Sanders claimed Toensing instigated the potential probe for political reasons, saying it began five years after his wife's time at the college but just as his presidential campaign was going on - "coincidentally, no doubt", the senator said.

"All that I will tell you now is it's a sad state of affairs in America when not only we have politicians being destroyed", Sanders said. "When she left it, it was in better shape than it had ever been".

"I think it's fairly pathetic that when people are involved in public life, it's not only they get attacked, but it's their wives and their families that get attacked".

"No, that's not what I'm talking about today", Sanders told the reporter.

"That's all that I want to say and we'll let it play out", he said.
