Manslaughter Charges Filed In Halstad Shooting Death

Mona Lisa Perez

A Minnesota woman is being charged with manslaughter for fatally shooting her boyfriend in an apparent YouTube stunt video-gone-wrong, officials said.

The couple was filming a video in which Ruiz was attempting to prove that a book would be able to shield him from a bullet, according to a criminal complaint obtained by BuzzFeed News. Police were able to locate a gold Desert Eagle.50 caliber pistol on the grass near the house and secured the firearm.

Authorities say Ruiz died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Another aunt says Ruiz's family is supporting Perez: The death of her partner of six years is "the worst punishment she can get". He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Ruiz's aunt, Claudia Ruiz, the pair were trying to tape a "prank" for YouTube in order to increase their online fame.

KSTP is sending a crew to Halstad and will continue to bring you updates throughout the day. Ruiz instructed Perez to shoot the book, thinking the book would stop the bullet. When Claudia asked Pedro why he must use a gun in the prank, Pedro replied: "because we want more viewers". Several of the videos uploaded to their joint channel feature her and Ruiz performing pranks and challenges, with a recent post titled "Doing scary stunts at the fair | part 1".

Perez told authorities that Ruiz eventually "convinced" her to shoot the book he was holding.

She added: "He wanted to have so many babies, I remember him telling me".

"Everyone was crying. I just couldn't take it anymore so I had to go back home", said a neighbor, Wayne Cameron.

"We're going to name it Pedro, I want my name to carry on". "I wish he would've just done another prank". She was expected to make an appearance in Norman County District Court by interactive TV on Wednesday afternoon.
