Microsoft issues Windows XP critical patches amid 'elevated risk' of cyberattacks

Microsoft includes Windows XP and Vista in June's Patch Tuesday updates

On Tuesday, Microsoft took the highly unusual step of issuing security patches for XP and other unsupported versions of Windows. We saw this just last month when Microsoft patched Windows XP to protect users against the WannaCry ransomware outbreak.

Microsoft has stated that some vulnerabilities posed elevated risks of "cyber attacks by government organisations".

For more information about the remaining security vulnerabilities released on June Patch Tuesday, visit Microsoft's Security Update Guide.

OK., so this isn't the most exciting Windows 10 Mobile update ever disseminated. He went on to urge users to adopt new Microsoft products, which are significantly more resistant to exploits, and not to expect regular security fixes in the future. Microsoft patched multiple SMB vulnerabilities in its March 2017 Patch Tuesday update, including issues that enabled WannaCry. "For things like WannaCry, when the exploitation is so high and everyone and anyone is affected, Microsoft did the right thing by releasing patches for an end-of-life operating system". This move may indicate that Microsoft has been made aware of exploits that may be pending imminent release from the Shadow Brokers.

Microsoft publishes its security updates at its Security Center portal here. The Redmond giant had also issued fixes for the two operating systems, since a large number of Government organizations (and banks) have been dependent on Windows XP for ATMs and other operations for a very long period of time.

"Our decision today to release these security updates for platforms not in extended support should not be viewed as a departure from our standard servicing policies", he wrote.

"I don't think that in the coming months we'll see more Windows XP patches". The occasional release of security patches does not equal a supported OS - not even close.

"The best protection is to be on a modern, up-to-date system that incorporates the latest defense-in-depth innovations". Peter Bright, from technology site Ars Technica, said: "patching is the wrong decision: it sends a clear message to recalcitrant corporations that they can stick with Windows XP, insecure as it is, because if anything too serious is found, Microsoft will update it anyway ..."

But if you still haven't got around to replacing your out-of-support versions, don't forget that this month brings you a blast from the past: old-school Patch Tuesday updates.
