INDIA HEAD COACH ROLE: Venkatesh Prasad throws his hat in the ring

Team India cricket coach to be selected on July 10: Sourav Ganguly

Former Indian fast bowler and junior national chief selector, Venkatesh Prasad, has applied for the post of team India coach.

Kumble was appointed instead and coached India to five Test series victories but resigned last week, stating his partnership with India captain Virat Kohli had become "untenable".

Two days ago, former Team India director Ravi Shastri too threw his hat in the ring and now, going by the team's choice, is considered as the most likely candidate to replace Kumble.

Amidst the confusion surrounding the appointment of the head coach for Team India, one thing that is becoming clear is that the decision on the coach will not be taken only on the basis of his credentials but also on the kind of support he is able to drum up in the corridors of power. Of course, he shares a good rapport with Shastri and knows Virender Sehwag well. In a rather suggestive tweet, the brother of Sanjiv Goenka who is the IPL team owner which is expected to be defunct as a two year ban on Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings is about to be lifted from the upcoming season, Goenka wrote, "Pl apply for Indian cricket coach".

The 47-year-old is the latest applicant after Ravi Shastri, who applied for the post on June 27.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has said applications will be accepted until July 9.

Earlier on Thursday, various media reports suggested that the ex-paceman may have applied for the post, after Kumble stepped down following a reported rift with India captain Virat Kohli. Prasad, who is now a junior national chief selector will end his term in September. "Which is something I am quite keen about and hope CAC (Cricket Advisory Committee) will take a note of it", Firstpost quoted Prasad as saying.

"If it (the extension) was done to suit Shastri, it won't go down well with Viru, who, we must remember, was asked to apply in the first place".

Shastri was part of the team from 2014 to 2016 as a Team Director.
