Baby Born at 35000 Feet During Spirit Airlines Flight: 'He's Beautiful'

Baby Cursed To Ruin His Birthday Flying Spirit For The Rest of His Life

Cristina was 36-weeks pregnant when she boarded the flight.

A baby in the United States has started out life in style after being born mid-flight. Christoph Lezcano weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds.

There was nothing she could do but notify a flight attendant, who contacted doctors on the ground - and asked passengers whether there were any medical personnel on board.

Christoph Carsten Lezcan made an early arrival aboard a Spirit Airlines flight after his mom, Cristina Penton, went into labor shortly after takeoff on a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Dallas, WGNO reported. About 30 minutes into the flight she informed flight attendants she was not feeling well. As it happened, a pediatrician and a nurse came forward; the last time the pediatrician had delivered a baby, Penton said he told her, was about 10 years ago in medical school.

"Everything started happening very quickly", Penton said in a statement. "Soon after that it was clear I was having my baby, and I was in pure panic", Penton said. Penton and her new baby, along with her two pre-teen children she was traveling with, were taken to a local hospital.

For Spirit's part, they've offered free birthday flights to Penton's family until baby Christoph turns 21. "We were just along for the ride".

"It was scary and exciting at the same time", said Lulu, Penton's daughter. Airline officials say the baby was probably born over the Gulf of Mexico, and the New Orleans area was the closest place to land.

A video of the remarkable birth was filmed by passenger Shelley Hedgecock Stark who, with the permission of Cristina, recorded the extraordinary moment.

On its website, Spirit Airlines recommends women in the eighth month of pregnancy should get examined by a doctor before committing to a flight. "But then again, stubborn, so I figured, no, no, we can handle this".

"It went really, really quick, " she said. Penton and her son were taken to Ochsner Medical Center-Kenner, in Kenner, Louisiana, upon the flight's landing. Her husband, who drove to meet her in New Orleans, later said "I told you so", after warning her not to take the trip.
