George Lucas Museum Gets LA City Council OK

LA City Council oks plans for George Lucas museum

Earlier this week, Lucas himself had a run-in with some "fans" who were hoping to score the Star Wars director's signature. The LosAngelesDailyNews reports that the project will be housed at Exposition Park and feature a wide variety of Lucas' personal collecion of movie memorabilia, paintings and illustrations. Groundbreaking will begin at some point next year, with the museum itself scheduled to open in 2021.

"I don't think I need to urge your "aye" vote today", he added. So as such I think it is quite a different mission.

Lucas had to abandon plans to build the museum in Chicago and San Francisco after facing challenges in those two cities.

The state-of-the-art cultural institution will be fully funded by the Lucas family which is estimated at over 1.2 billion dollars for construction and operating endowment with no cost to taxpayers, making LMNA one of the largest gifts given to an American City. But Mayor Eric Garcetti and others lobbied the filmmaker to bring the museum to Los Angeles. Lucas considered both the L.A. proposal, which in Exposition Park will be near his alma matter of USC, and San Francisco, where he has strong connections after growing up in Modesto and living in the Bay Area for decades. "I was in school here and I've been very supportive of film schools", Lucas continued. "That's where I learned movies. Basically where I started my career was in school here", he told the council Tuesday.

After years of trying to find the right spot to build the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, it seems George Lucas didn't have to stray far from his roots after all.

Are you excited about the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art finally being built?

His wish is to motivate young people to "see outside the little road that they've got carved out for themselves".

Designs call for a five-story, 300,000-square-foot building that would focus on artwork with storytelling elements, including works dating back to before movies and film. The museum will sit along Vermont Avenue, between Martin Luther King Jr.

The museum will replace parking lots and a soccer field (which will be relocated and improved) and include, in addition to galleries, a café and restaurant, theaters, lecture halls, a library, and classrooms.
