Minnesota election chief skeptical of Trump panel's voter information request

Op-Ed All 50 states receive'lengthy request for personal voter data

Cuomo said NY "refuses to perpetuate the myth voter played a role in our election" and is turning down a request to give the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity the names, addresses, birth dates, voting history and last four digits of the social security numbers of every registered voter in the state.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is seeking several pieces of information about voters, including their names, birthdays, the last four digits of their Social Security numbers and their voting history dating back to 2006.

Trump has alleged without evidence that up to 5 million people voted illegally, costing him the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton.

While she hasn't yet received a written request to do so, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver pledged Friday to not release voter information to President Donald Trump's Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

"It's not a public record", he said in an interview. The commission is chaired by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a voter-fraud hardliner. This entire commission is based on the specious and false notion that there was widespread voter fraud last November.

Arkansas is among the states that have not yet made a decision about providing the information.

While officials in some states said they would partly honor the request but not share any protected voter information.

In the 2008 elections, rumors suggested democrats and Hispanic voters in Nevada were getting prank calls telling them they could cast their votes a day later to avoid long lines or vote by phone calls or texts.

The report, which officials said should be completed by 2018, must also include information on the vulnerabilities in federal voting systems that could lead to improper voter registrations and voter fraud.

American Civil Liberties Union challenged obstacles to registration, cutbacks on early voting, and strict voter identification requirements in 15 states during the 2016 presidential elections.

Critics urge that the quickest way to eliminate concerns over mass voter fraud in California would be to cross-reference jury duty response cards and DMV records against voting history.

Both McAuliffe and Padilla said the commission is a waste of taxpayer money that should be focusing on investigating Russian tampering, which they called the real threat to election integrity.

"They're asking for a lot of stuff, and it's a lot of personal stuff, on literally millions of people in Minnesota", Simon said.

The California and Virginia officials said attention would be better spent upgrading aging voting systems or focusing on Russia's alleged election meddling. "California's participation would only to legitimize the false and already debunked claims of massive voter fraud made by the president, the vice president, and Mr. Kobach".

However, the senator said, "nearly all of the information requested is already publicly available at Board of Elections websites across New York State". He also questioned the commission's credibility and called Trump's claim that millions voted illegally past year "false and irresponsible".

However, the commission says state law doesn't permit it to release birthdates, driver license numbers or Social Security numbers except to police or other state agencies and the presidential panel doesn't qualify as either one.
