Venus Williams' attorney: 'Fatal auto crash was an unfortunate accident'

Emotional Venus breaks down after first round win

Venus Williams broke down in tears during a Wimbledon press conference Monday, when asked about the fatal vehicle crash she was involved in that left a 78-year-old man dead.

The former no. 1 world-now 11th in the WTA rankings, was declared Thursday responsible by the police of Palm Beach Gardens (Florida) of a road accident that caused the death of a 78 year-old man.

But still, Williams, as we stated above, according to the police report, is considered "at fault".

The tennis star took to Facebook on June 30 to share an emotional post to the victims of the crash, US Weekly reports. According to the report, the light changed to green, and Barson said she drove through the intersection when Williams' 2010 Toyota Sequoia cut across in front of her vehicle.

Williams, now ranked 11th in the world, is due to begin her quest for a sixth Wimbledon singles crown as the tournament begins on Monday.

A member of the All-England Club then stepped in and told the crowd of journalists that Venus Williams would not be able to answer any more questions on this matter, before asking them to give her a minute to gather her composure.

Police say there was no evidence Miss Williams was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or that she was distracted by a phone.

The suit says Barson died as a result of his injuries in the crash.

Williams' lawyer, Malcolm Cunningham, issued a statement to reporters calling the incident "an unfortunate accident" and stating that Williams has not been charged over the crash.

"But according to authorities, "(Williams) is at fault for violating the right of way of (the Barsons)", the report said. Passenger Jerome Barson was in the other vehicle involved.

The victor of seven Grand Slam championships was not using her phone and had not taken drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, police said.

No. 10-seed Venus Williams advanced to the second round at Wimbledon on Monday with a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Elise Mertens, but her post-match press conference took an emotional turn.

Williams, 37, is a seven-time Grand Slam champion who won five Wimbledon titles between 2000 and 2008 plus the 2000 and 2001 US Opens.
