Wimbledon 2017: Assessing the women's seeds

Angelique Kerber during last year's Wimbledon final

Two-time victor Petra Kvitova heads the market following a warm-up tournament success in Birmingham.

With a police investigation ongoing, Kvitova could not discuss the attack, but she spoke glowingly of the reception she has had on returning to the tour from fellow players.

Kvitova will next face the victor of the contest between American Madison Brengle and Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands.

She then pulled out of her semi final at Eastbourne where she was set to win her first title on grass claiming she had been ordered to rest.

With Williams nearly eight months pregnant, and Maria Sharapova also absent, this is a very open women's tournament.

In the absence of American great Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and the headline-grabbing Sharapova, women's tennis has an undeniable lack of star power heading into Wimbledon, which gets under way today.

Keys beat Japan's Nao Hibino 6-4 6-4 in a tick over an hour.

"It was my motivation to come back and play at Wimbledon and I'm happy that my dream came true".

"I think that before I was very nervous before every match".

Wimbledon runner-up Garbine Muguruza believes there are plenty of players who could make an impact at next week's championships despite the absence of last year's victor Serena Williams and former champion Maria Sharapova. Had it been anyone but her sister on the other side of the net, she may well be arriving here as the oldest Grand Slam champion of them all.

While Ostapenko, who faces Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round, arrived in London on a wave of post-Paris euphoria, second seed Halep is still struggling to come to terms with her failure to win her first Grand Slam.

Konta has said: "I have to look after myself, I hope to have a long career ahead of me".

After a nervy serving game, as she made life hard for herself after a a backhand error and a double fault, Kvitova forced to finally forced Larsson to put a slice forehand wide on the set point.

Madrid Open victor Simona Halep, French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, five-time Wimbledon victor Venus Williams and Britain's very own Johanna Konta are also among the contenders.

Only a gruelling period of rehabilitation on the hand, which at first meant just bending her fingers, helped her enough to recover and return to the court.

"I'm glad that I'm part of the tennis family", said Kvitova.
