Germany: Protesters Demand G-20 Address Humanitarian, Environmental Concerns

Merkel criticizes Trump trade policy before G20

In her weekly podcast, Merkel said this year's G20 summit will delve into issues championed by protesters such as distribution of wealth and consumption of resources - alongside related issues like climate change, free markets, consumer protection and upholding social standards.

The summit comes at time of heightened political tension, with the U.S. president at odds with many other G20 leaders on issues from the Paris climate accord to trade and steel imports.

A demonstrator waves an anti-G20 banner during a demonstration called by several NGOs ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg on July 2.

Her comments come ahead of a planned meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

Asked whether a state visit would take place during 2017, the PM's spokesman said: "We have extended an invitation, it has been accepted and we will set out plans in due course".

"I don't think we'll have unified positions on all issues at the end, but it's sensible and honest to talk to each other on all issues of worldwide diplomacy", she said at a news conference in Berlin.

The site is about a kilometre (less than a mile) from where the leaders will be meeting.

'We're preparing intensively for every form of protest, ' he said. But with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan joining him at the Group of 20 meetings in Germany this week, Trump is unlikely to be the only target for demonstrators.

Sunday's demonstration in the northern German city was organised by environmental, labour, human rights and church groups protesting against the policies of the world's richest countries. As a result, on Tuesday night mass protests hit the city, and the police had to use water cannons and pepper gas.

Presumably this means that President Trump will speak with French President Emmanuel Macron; however, specific details of that call have not been released. "It is written in Hamburg's state law that Hamburg is a peaceful mediator of people's conflicts", he said.

Hamburg police chief Ralf Martin Meyer admitted that this is the largest operation in the history of Hamburg's police.

"While we seek chances to cooperate for everyone's benefit, globalization is seen in the American administration as a process which isn't about win-win situations, but about winners and losers", she said.
