Breckenridge wildfire grows to 70 acres, Peak 7 neighborhood evacuated

Wildfire north of Breckenridge prompts evacuations

Peak 7 is under a mandatory evacuation and residents of both Breckenridge and Shekel are warned to prepare to leave their homes.

Police allowed people in the evacuated areas to go home and get a few things but they can't sleep there.

The RWB Fire District is working alongside the U.S. Forest Service to fight the fire.

No injuries have been reported, and no structures have been destroyed as a result of the fire; no highway closures have been issued. An evacuation center is set up at Summit Middle School.

The fire, on Peak 2 of the Tenmile Mountain range surrounding Breckenridge, slowed overnight thanks to cooler temperatures, but forecasters predicted sunny weather in the 80s Thursday and firefighters said the blaze was still "spotting", or beginning to burn again in places.

He added that 100 animals had also been sheltered.

Visible flames have tapered off but heavy smoke is still billowing from the site and moving toward Frisco.

UPDATE (5:05 p.m.): Summit County has just declared a fire hazard emergency banning all open fires and the sale of fireworks.

The fire, one of several burning in the West, was reported late Wednesday morning and is consuming beetle-killed trees in the White River National Forest.

Winds from these thunderstorms can also effect the fire until crews are able to fully contain it.

Another community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Peak 2 Fire is now a Type 3 Incident Command structure and is expected to transition into a Type 1 Incident Comman Team over the course of the next two days.
