It declares al-Baghdadi as the leader of the new caliphate.

Fighting now rages on in Mosul's densely-populated Old City, where Daesh elements have put up stiff resistance in the face of advancing Iraqi army soldiers and allied fighters.

Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Sunni Arab tribesmen and Shia militiamen have also been involved in the gruelling battle.

The United States leads an global coalition that is backing the campaign against Islamic State in Mosul by conducting airstrikes against the militants and assisting troops on the ground.

In mid-2014, ISIS overran the city, which now represents the embattled terrorist group's last stronghold in northern Iraq.

Over recent weeks, Iraq has reported slow advances in its campaign to dislodge Islamic State from the Old City, noted for its population density and narrow alleyways.

Without Mosul - by far the largest city to fall under militant control - IS's dominion in Iraq will be reduced to mainly rural, desert areas west and south of the city where tens of thousands of people live.

The siege has been backed by US -led coalition airstrikes, but warplanes have dropped fewer bombs in recent days as Iraqi forces inched closer to retaking the city.

May 16: A military spokesman says nearly 90 percent of west Mosul has been recaptured.

With Mosul now retaken, numerous displaced civilians are expected to return, putting pressure on the Iraqi government to begin rebuilding the city in haste.

Abadi's spokesman, Saad al-Hadithi, said victory would not be formally declared until the few remaining Islamic State militants were cleared from Mosul.
