Steel Tariffs To Play Major Role At G20 Summit

Donald Trump Cuts Isolated Figure On World Stage

President Trump on Sunday declared his trip to the G20 leaders summit a "great success for the USA", saying on Twitter he had "explained" to his counterparts that the U.S.is intent on improving its trade deals. The Group of 7 meeting in Sicily shortly thereafter exposed further divisions over policy, and a week later Mr. Trump announced he was pulling the United States out of the landmark Paris agreement on fighting global warming.

"It's a hard issue (steel) and it can be a very provocative issue", said Thomas Bernes, a former International Monetary Fund and World Bank official who is now a fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation based in Waterloo, Ontario. Trump said in an early morning tweet. Juncker said that Europe expects to increase its exports to Japan by a third after trade barriers drop away.

As the Friday start of the Group of 20 economic summit in Hamburg approaches, the Trump administration represents one of the chief sources of uncertainty in global trade. Any penalties could have a ripple effect on other trading partners and allies such as Germany, Japan, Russia, South Korea and Mexico, all major steel exporters to the U.S.

"Explained that the US must fix the many bad trade deals it has made", he tweeted early Sunday.

"That hurts us, but it also hurts the Americans", he added.

"There is a danger that the summit will lead to polarisation between the United States and other countries" on climate change and other issues, warned Oxford Analytics economist Adam Slater.

Mr Trump is using the threat of a trade war to demand that global leaders reduce steelmaking capacity.

The future Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Japan "will be the model of the economical order of the 21st century", Abe told the other world leaders, according to Maruyama - Trump among them.

While China is the central focus of the Trump administration's Section 232 investigations of steel and aluminum imports, other nations are interested in the investigations' results.

During his four-day trip, Trump would travel to Poland and then to Germany to attend the G-20 Summit which among others is being attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indeed, analysts have warned that tariffs could drive up steel prices for US manufacturers.

World Trade Organization members are already reeling from the unsafe precedent being set by a growing preoccupation with national security measures at the Geneva-based trade body.

USA allies complain that the result of Trump's national security probes could harm their domestic industries both by imposing direct tariffs and by diverting the overcapacity of global steel and aluminum products into their markets.
