Charlie's parents told to spell out fresh evidence after interrupting court hearing

Charlie Gard provided by his family taken at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. A British court will assess new evidence Monday

"If he's still fighting, we're still fighting", said Connie Yates, the mother of 11-month-old Charlie Gard. Yates and Charlie's father, Chris Gard, spoke outside London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, where the baby is in intensive care and on life support.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital has argued that the treatment overseas sought by Charlie's parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, would not help.

"Mitochondrial diseases are cruel because they strike babies and young children, who rapidly deteriorate", Harding said.

Last week New-York Presybterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center offered to admit Charlie and to provide him with experimental treatment, according to the Washington Post.

They questioned whether Mr Justice Francis was the correct person to be assessing the fresh medical evidence, given that in April he had ruled Charlie's life support should be withdrawn.

On Monday afternoon, the case returns to the High Court to hear fresh arguments following new information from researchers at the Vatican's children's hospital.

The interventions of the pope and the United States president have been the biggest help in keeping 11-month-old Charlie Gard alive, the critically ill baby's mother has said.

Mr Gard said they needed a specialist in Charlie's condition and therefore need to send him to America to "give him the chance he deserves".

The case of baby Charlie Gard has the gravest consequences for the rights of parents and the autonomy of the family.

Their previous legal attempts have failed as judges in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in London ruled in favour of GOSH doctors, while the European Court of Human Rights declined to hear the couple's appeal.

Rev Patrick Mahoney, addressing supporters and media before the family statement, said he was pleased to be able to visit Charlie a day earlier. They said they had determined that the proposed treatment was unlikely to help the boy, and would only prolong his suffering.

The boy is battling mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease that affects his energy production and respiration, and the court had been expected to decide today whether the wishes of Charlie's parents to pursue the experimental treatment will be granted.

The hospital alternatively offered to arrange for the experimental drug to be shipped to Great Ormond Street and advise its staff on administering the drug.

Charlie's doctors say his brain is extensively damaged at a cellular level.

GOSH said it was acting in Charlie's best interests and it would now be for the High Court to make its judgement on the facts.

"We don't see what's dignified about him dying - we think it's dignified that he has a chance at life and if it doesn't work then we'll let him go".
