Trump offers condolences after Marines killed in plane crash

The burning wreckage

Emergency management officials in Leflore County, about 80 miles north of Jackson, Mississippi, said debris from the KC-130 was spread for miles across the rural area, according to The Associated Press. The Marines said Tuesday that the air tanker was based at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York, and headed to California.

The KC-130 transport aircraft crashed into a field in rural MS, killing at least 16 people aboard and spreading debris for miles, officials said.

"There's a lot of ammo in the plane, that's why we are keeping so far back", local WMC Action News 5 quoted a Mississippi State trooper at the site as saying.

Six Marines and one Navy member aboard the plane were members of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., traveling to Yuma, Ariz., for pre-deployment training, a Marine Corps statement said. "The cause of the crash is unknown at this time; the incident is under investigation".

It was the worst Marine Corps aviation crash since January 2005, when a CH-53E crashed in Iraq, killing 30 Marines and one sailor.

The Marines, who traditionally use the KC-130 for aerial refueling, have not provided any information regarding where the plane was coming from or what may have led to the accident.

But Mike Barton, public affairs director at the Air Station says there were no Marines from Cherry Point on the aircraft.

Others also offered their condolences. Due to the presence of the ammunition, restrictions were placed on who could initially approach the scene of the crash, officials said.

Images posted online by local media showed the crumpled wreckage of a plane engulfed in flames in a field surrounded by tall vegetation, with a large plume of smoke in the sky above.

"On behalf of the entire Marine Corps, I want to express my deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the aircraft mishap yesterday afternoon in Mississippi".
