Bengaluru: Prison witnesses protests soon after cop transfers

She has now been shifted to the traffic department as the commissioner for Road Safety and Traffic, reported news agency ANI. Evidently, by transferring her out and not waiting for the outcome of the inquiry, the Siddaramaiah government has exposed itself to the charge that it is shielding the corrupt by covering up their misdeeds.

Mr Rao has been replaced by N S Megharikh, Additional Director General of Police, anti-corruption bureau, who has been transferred with immediate effect and posted as additional DGP, Prisons.

The row over alleged VIP treatment to VK Sasikala is only getting bigger with further revelations from DIG Prisons D Roopa's report coming out in the open.

The transfer comes after Roopa submitted two separate reports to the Karnataka government last week exposing the irregularities in the prisons, including the VIP treatment given to the inmates for a price. Sasikala has been sent to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru and her bail plea has been rejected. "Strict action will be taken to bring the guilty to book", asserted the statement from the State Secretariat.

Retired IAS officer Vinay Kumar will begin his inquiry into Roopa's allegations of irregularities at the Parappana Agrahara Central prisons on Tuesday.

Roopa was quoted by the NDTV as saying that she found out about her transfer to the traffic department from the media.

Unfazed by CM's criticism, Roopa denied divulging any details of her report to the media.

DG Prisons, Satyanarayana Rao, who retires this month-end, has called her allegations "wild and baseless". The two women lived together, and when Ms Jayalalithaa died in hospital at the end of past year while still Chief Minister, her party, the AIADMK, shifted orbit overnight to Ms Sasikala, placing her in charge of all decisions as General Secretary, the outfit's top post. "I think this government (Karnataka government) wants to protect illegal activities".
