Jerusalem On Edge As Israel (Sort Of) Flexes Muscles at Temple Mount

Israeli security forces stand guard in front of Palestinian Muslim worshippers praying outside Lions Gate a main entrance to Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem's Old City

The assailant was shot, the spokesperson said, although at of 11:15 p.m., they could not state whether the attacker was dead or not.

The three Israelis stabbed to death and a fourth who was wounded were from the fenced-in West Bank settlement of Neve Tsuf. Three of the victims died, while the fourth was hospitalized.

More than 200 Palestinians - the majority believed to be the perpetrators - and dozens of Israelis have been killed in the attacks.

The Palestine Authority is freezing all contacts with Israel over the Jerusalem holy site dispute and the violence which broke out in the past days, president of the authority Mahmoud Abbas has announced.

Palestinian media has reported that before the alleged murder, al-Abed had published a status about the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosque, the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem that have stirred tensions in recent weeks.

There's a tense standoff in Jerusalem Friday between Palestinians and Israeli police.

The metal detectors are perceived by the Palestinians as an encroachment on Muslim rights and portrayed by Israel as a needed security measure following an attack that killed two Israeli policemen.

Security forces prohibited Palestinian men under the age of 50 from entering Jerusalem's Old City for Friday Muslim prayers this week, . The Palestinian Red Crescent said around 450 people were injured in the chaos, largely from rubber bullets and tear gas inhalation.

Muslim leaders called for mass gatherings to protest the erection of the metal detectors.

Three Israelis having dinner in their West Bank home were murdered by a 19-year-old Palestinian wielding a knife Friday.

He was shot by a neighbour - who was a soldier with the Israeli Defense Forces - and taken to hospital, but his condition was unclear.

The al-Aqsa Mosque compound is a flashpoint Islamic site, which is also holy to Jews.

"We will continue to pray outside the Al-Aqsa mosque as long as the metal detectors are at the gates", said the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Mohammed Hussein.
