Kenyan teens rejecting HIV treatment, new study shows

Malaysia among Asia Pacific countries with most new AIDS infections

The International AIDS Society conference organisers warned in a statement that "all of the scientific challenges still before us are threatened by a weakening resolve to fund HIV science".

To fight off with the HIV infection without continued treatment, the South African child adds to the evidence that early and aggressive ART which may have a lasting effect on a patient ability. It comes amid reports that a South African girl has shown no signs of the virus rebounding despite being taken off drugs years ago.

At present, the treatment does help control HIV, but the patient needs to take it for the rest of their lives. "If in this moment we don't figure this out and really get these programs to scale, we're not going to have the impact on the epidemic we were hoping to have", said Deborah Birx from the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, according to CGTN America.

Once 96 weeks had passed, the results showed that those who received injections every eight weeks experienced the best results, with 94 percent of them showing that the virus was still subdued.

This has given hope to the 37 million people worldwide infected with the virus that causes AIDS.

A nine-year-old child has been virtually cured of HIV, scientists claimed yesterday.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said: "Further study is needed to learn how to induce long-term HIV remission in infected babies".

Still, the child is not cured of HIV.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health is now conducting a trial to test whether giving ART to HIV-infected babies within 48 hours of birth leads to long-term control of the virus after treatment is stopped.

At the beginning of the treatment, the child had very high virus levels, which makes the achievement even more impressive. There is no HIV infection, but advanced testing techniques have been able to detect a reservoir of virus integrated inside a tiny proportion of immune cells. There are no genetic mutations that would otherwise have given her an immunity to the virus, so her resistance is most likely due to the experimental early treatment she received.

"By further studying the child‚ we may expand our understanding of how the immune system controls HIV replication". It was found that an injection every month or two months was just as effective at preventing the virus from returning as daily pills.

Meanwhile, there was also a case in France where a patient has now lived for more than 11 years without drugs.

The "Mississippi Baby" was put on treatment within 30 hours of birth and went 27 months without treatment before HIV re-emerged in her blood.

Other similar cases include a French woman aged roughly 20 who was born with HIV and has her infection under control despite no HIV medicines since she was around six, and a MS baby born with HIV in 2010 suppressed her infection for 27 months after stopping treatment before it reappeared in her blood.
