Flat Nintendo Switch Forecast Means Extreme Shortage

Splatoon 2 sold 670955 units within first three days in Japan

The latest financial results for Nintendo show a healthy profit, as the Switch's Pokémon game is slated for "2018 or later".

Nintendo has sold over 4.7 million Nintendo Switch consoles since its release in March 2017. Nintendo could sell double the number of Switches during the last three months of 2017, considering in the seasonal spike in demand for video games.

The company also revealed that last quarter 0.95 million Nintendo 3DS consoles were displaced, while portable software reached 12.74 million units sold. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and ARMS, which both launched during the quarter, sold 3.54 million and 1.18 million units, respectively. There are also strong third-party titles on the way for Nintendo 3DS. Primarily because of Switch hardware and software sales, Nintendo took ¥154 billion (approximately $1.4 billion Dollars / £1 billion) in revenue, and made a ¥21.3 billion ($190 million USD / £146 million) profit.

Nintendo's quarterly profit topped estimates as more people bought its new Switch gaming machine, lifting expectations for brisk sales during the holiday shopping period. That can be deduced from the company's fiscal quarter report. However, that still means Nintendo sold 3.92 million copies. It's planning a worldwide release for Splatoon 2 this month and Super Mario Odyssey in October. It's a shame we can't see Splatoon 2's opening numbers quite yet, but in October we're sure they'll be looking great.

Nintendo recorded an operating profit of $144.95 million (5.13 billion yen) for its fiscal first quarter, compared with a year-ago loss of 24.5 billion yen. Our smart device and IP related income was 9.0 billion yen (450% increase on a year-on-year basis).
