Powerful bomb explosion kills over 20 Shia Muslims in western Afghanistan

A deadly explosion has taken place in Herat city in West of Afghanistan as there are fears that dozens of people have been killed or wounded

Some reports also suggest that at least 30 people were killed in the deadly "terror attack".

An Afghan hospital official says at least 20 people have been killed by an explosion and gun attack on a Shi'ite Muslim mosque in the western city of Herat.

The attack took place in the middle of evening prayers when the mosque was packed with about 300 worshippers.

"More than 20 bodies, and more than 30 wounded have so far been brought to the hospital", hospital spokesman Rafeeq Shirzai told AFP, referring to the attack on the Jawadya mosque.

A spokesperson for the Afghan government said the main explosion may have been "caused by a vehicle bomb".

The attack started when one suicide bomber began firing on worshippers inside the mosque before blowing himself up, said Abdul Ahad Walizada, spokesman for the police chief.

One of the terrorists was wearing a suicide vest, who detonated himself while the second one was armed with a rifle. "They are both dead", he added.

A spokesperson for the regional governor told the BBC that the suicide attacker had opened fire inside the mosque before detonating his explosives.

No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Some eyewitnesses present at the spot said a number of wounded were also taken to a private health facility in Herat city.

The death toll is expected to rise, according to local officals.
