Teen jumps out of plane onto tarmac at SFO

The teen an American citizen was stopped by construction crew members who were working nearby. He has been detained for questioning by police and will be transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. According to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel

A teenager detained Tuesday after opening an emergency exit and jumping from a plane after it landed at San Francisco International Airport was released by Customs and Border Protection later that day and turned over to San Francisco police.

Passengers say the 17-year-old U.S. citizen, who was traveling alone, had appeared "anxious" and "fidgety" throughout the Copa Airlines flight from Panama City, per KGO and the San Jose Mercury News.

The flight crew closed the exit door, and the plane continued to its gate without any more trouble.

Airport spokesman Doug Yakel said an airfield construction crew took hold of the teen and he is in custody. Other passengers said he seemed anxious and fidgety during the flight and that he acted very quickly, making it hard for anyone to stop him.

"Apparently he slid down the wing onto the tarmac", said Yakel, adding that the teen was not injured. A woman from San Jone, Sophia Gibson, told KNTV that the people sitting next to the teen were shocked when he jumped off the plane. An investigation is now being conducted by Customs and Border Protection and at present, there is no information about the boy's reasons for his actions.

"And then this guy, I see him jump on the wing and then he starts climbing down the wing and then he just runs".

The passenger, a United States citizen, was not injured and was taken into police custody.

"We are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to support the ongoing investigation", the company said. "And everyone was just screaming".

It is unknown why the teen jumped out of the plane. This was after he jumped out of the emergency door of a Boeing 737, shortly after it landed in San Francisco. The crew detained him until the police arrived. "The door's open. Someone jumped off, '" said Matt Crowder of Atherton, California.

"People were yelling, 'Tell the flight attendants".
