Doklam standoff: India silent on China claims

China warns India of 'serious consequences' over border

India claims Sikkim border as part of its territory, while China has said that the area falls on their side as per the 1890 treaty signed between British and China.

On Thursday night, Mr Ren urged India to "give up the illusion of its delaying tactic, as no country should underestimate the Chinese forces", according to Xinhua.

For the time being, China looks ready to keep things calm, said another Asian diplomat, familiar with China's thinking on the issue.

China alleged that India's intrusion into its territory under the pretext of defending Bhutan's territorial claims, has not only violated Beijing's territorial sovereignty, but also challenged Bhutan's sovereignty and independence. A Chinese foreign ministry statement on Thursday puts emphasis that Beijing and Thimphu conducted joint surveys in the border area and have reached a "basic consensus on the actual state of the border area and the alignment of their boundary".

Geng repeated that on June 18 about 270 Indian troops "advanced more than 100 meters into the Chinese territory to obstruct the road building of the Chinese side".

Meanwhile, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Ren Guoqiang said that since the Doklam incident occurred China has shown its "utmost goodwill" and tried to communicate with India through diplomatic channels to resolve the conflict.

China will take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate and lawful rights and interests.

"India thought wrongly that China would tolerate its actions because the meeting is going to be held soon", said Chu Yin, a researcher at the Center for China and Globalization, a Beijing think tank.

Ma's remarks Friday is a departure from the heated rhetoric of the Chinese over seven weeks of the ongoing standoff between Indian and Chinese troops at the trijunction with Bhutan.

"The standoff has not been resolved because China and India see the incident from different perspectives".

The military standoff comes ahead of the BRICS Summit in the Chinese city of Xiamen early next month, where leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will meet. "If China backs down now, India may be emboldened to make more trouble in the future, " it added. "Since people of both countries are tremendously patriotic, even economic cooperation between the two countries would be heavily affected", Zhao noted.

The official army newspaper the PLA Daily followed with extensive coverage of the dispute, including a commentary accusing India of concocting "all sorts of excuses" over what it called illegal entry by Indian personnel into Chinese territory.

China and India have always been suspicious of each other, a legacy of the 1962 border war, India's playing host to exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and China's close relations with India's regional rival Pakistan.
