MSHP says they are looking for Ian McCarthy 39 of Clinton MO as a person of interest in the case

As he was exiting the vehicle, the driver pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting the officer. The driver returned to his auto and drove away, but crashed and proceeded to flee on foot.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says authorities are looking for a man who shot and killed a western Missouri police officer during a traffic stop. Police said they believe he may still be in Clinton. Authorities did not know whether he was wounded.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is searching for 39-year-old Ian McCarthy of Clinton, Missouri, who is a suspect in the shooting death of Officer Gary Michael.

Michael, 37, had been on the force less than a year, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.

He had been with the department for less than a year when he was shot and killed. Michael was pronounced dead at a local hospital. "(Michael) was heroic right to the end.

As of Monday morning, police were still searching for the suspect. He was protecting his community, ' he said.

"The time signature for this footage is consistent with Officer Michael's murder".

Michael was shot during a traffic stop in Clinton. Police officers are always mindful that something bad could happen.

'He has already made one killing and decided that's in his mindset.

The Kansas City Star reports that McCarthy was allegedly driving a Dodge Nitro.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of McCarthy should contact law enforcement, call 911 or dial *55 on a cell phone.
