National Hurricane Center: Tropical Cyclone May Form Off Florida

Tropical Storm Franklin Could Form This Week

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Franklin's top sustained winds had decreased to near 50 miles per hour (80 kph) early Tuesday and predicted it would continue weakening while moving over the peninsula. Tropical Storm Franklin will head through the Yucatan Peninsula and then the path puts it back out on the Gulf of Mexico towards Mexico's main east coast.

In their 2 p.m. advisory, forecasters said Tropical Storm Franklin will near the coast this evening between Chetumal, on the Belize border, and Punta Allen, a popular bonefishing village.

"Franklin could be a hurricane by the time it makes a second landfall between Tampico and Veracruz, Mexico, on Thursday morning", said AccuWeather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski. Wind gusts of at least 80 miles per hour are possible near coastal regions of northern Veracruz if Franklin becomes a hurricane, according to AccuWeather.

Residents of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize can expect 3 to 6 inches of rain with locally higher amounts, likely to trigger local flash flooding. Aside of coastal gusty winds, heavy mountain rain and mudslides will be the greatest threats posed by Tropical Storm Franklin. A Tropical Storm Warning is also in effect from Rio Lagartos to Sabancuy, and a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Sabancuy to Puerto de Veracruz.

Tropical Storm Franklin made landfall in the Yucatán Peninsula late last night as a strong tropical storm.

Landfall probabilities forecast by the Colorado State team remain above average, suggesting a greater threat that a hurricane could strike the US coastline than in recent years.

The United States should not be directly affected by this system, although parts of the Texas Gulf Coast could see high surf and risky rip currents later this week, the Weather Channel said.

The height of the 2017 hurricane season will be from mid-August through mid-October since hurricanes can form in the Atlantic and Carribean easier due to the high heat.
