Directors may feel the heat on climate issues

The report is awaiting approval by the Trump administration.

MARGARET BRENNAN: The Trump administration is studying a draft report on climate change that was leaked to the New York Times.

The report's content is at odds with the Trump administration's position - and at times rejection - of the scientific community's belief that human activity causes climate change.

The report, known as the Climate Science Special Report, determined that it's "extremely likely" that over half the temperature rise recorded over the past four decades is linked to human activity such as tailpipe, smokestack and other industrial emissions.

The draft report by scientists from 13 federal agencies says climate change has added significantly to the amount of rain and snow we get in the Midwest - if we had not noticed - and increased average temperatures here more than anywhere else in the United States. The White House will withhold comment on any draft report before its scheduled release date. President Trump and his cabinet have made their views on climate change clear, with the President announcing earlier this year that America is to withdraw from the Paris agreement. The New York Times also reported that global warming skeptics were "equally anxious that the draft report, as well as the larger [National Climate Assessment], will be publicly released".

The former SC governor was asked on NBC's "Today" show about a new climate change report from government scientists at 13 federal agencies.

The paper also said "those who challenge scientific data on human-caused climate change" are anxious the report will be publicly released.

Though Trump didn't question the science behind climate change, and said he might consider rejoining the pact at a later stage and that the United States will continue to work to reduce greenhouse gases, he has also rolled back some regulations introduced by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

The president said while making the announcement that the USA would start to negotiate a fair for deal the American workers, people, companies and taxpayers. An increase above 2 degrees Celsius would push the global environment closer to catastrophic changes, scientists have said.

A government scientist told the Times on terms of anonymity they are fearful that Trump and the White House could change or suppress the report before its August 18 approval deadline. But given Trump's penchant for launching into a self-destructive rage every time a leak embarrasses him, it could also inspire the White House into an ill-advised act of revenge. We are living, right now, contending with more and increasingly brutal climate events - floods, droughts, heat waves and hurricanes - mostly of our own man-made doing. More severe storms, a shrinking ice pack and loss of sea life make for a plain-to-see picture.
