Rafael Marquez Accused Of Fronting For Mexican Drug Cartel

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has designated Mexico men's national team captain Rafael Marquez as a member of a drug trafficking organization. The entities include restaurants, bars, tourism, music production, the Grand Casino in Guadalajara, the Mexican Football club, and Club Deportivo Morumbi. The sanctions are the result of a multi-year investigation of the drug trafficking organization allegedly headed by Raul Flores Hernandez. Flores is allegedly allies with the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation drug cartels, the Times reported.

On August 9, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced that following an investigation spanning several years, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) was targeting Raúl Flores Hernández and the Flores Drug Trafficking Organization. The sanction freezes their USA assets and forbids US citizens from doing business with them.

Mike Vigil, former chief of global operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, claimed that Flores Hernandez has been active since the late 1980s but has never risen above being a mid-level trafficker.

The 38-year-old Marquez now serves as captain of both the Mexican national team, as well as Atlas, a club located in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Treasury Dept. didn't indicate whether Marquez will face charges from a US criminal court.

Later in the day, Marquez denied having any links to drug traffickers.

During his club career, he won two Champions League trophies and four league titles while playing for Barcelona. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Marquez became the first player to captain his country at four different World Cups and just the second Mexican player to score in three different World Cups.

Rafael Marquez was one of 21 people and 42 organisations singled out by the U.S. treasury department for sanctions. Marquez also played in Europe with AS Monaco, FC Barcelona and Hellas Verona, in Mexico with Leon and in Major League Soccer with the New York Red Bulls. Among the entities that the department cited were his soccer academy and health and rehabilitation clinics.
