Perseid meteor shower to peak this Friday night & early Saturday morning

The Greatest Meteor Show of All Time | Watch the Skies - NASA Blogs

Qatar Centre for Space Sciences and Astronomy has said that Qatar's skies will witness a "stunning astronomical event" as Perseid meteor shower becomes visible on Friday with more than 100 meteors possibly seen per hour.

Typical raters for the upcoming shower will be about 80 meteors an hour but you could see as many as 150-200 meteors and hour in a heavier burst.

Stargazers should find an area away from light pollution, and allow about 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark.

It gets its name from the constellation Perseus as it looks like it originates at the same point in the sky as the constellation. The moon will be ¾ full which means the bright light it emits will drown out some of the visible meteors streaking across our skies. Just face northeast and look halfway up. "The best Perseid performance of which we are aware occurred back in 1993, when the peak Perseid rate topped 300 meteors per hour".

Next year, the Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to coincide with the New Moon (this moon phase is very dim) and makes for great viewing conditions. This moonlight will cause the faint meteors to go unseen, dropping the rates to around 40 to 50 meteors per hour.

Whether you're on NASA's payroll or a total layman, the Perseid meteor shower is not to be missed.

It's also a good idea to check the weather forecast.

For those interested in catching the celestial event, Mr Chee recommended places such as Changi Beach, West Coast Beach and Bishan Park, where there are better views of the night sky.

The Perseid meteors are the most consistent and productive of the annual meteor displays, said astronomer Geoff Chester of the Naval Observatory, who explained they are usually fast and bright.

Friday and Saturday night are both peak times for these showers.

One other factor that may put a damper on the meteoric action is the fact that the almost three-quarters-full moon, rising shortly before midnight, will outshine some of the smaller, thereby fainter, meteors.

If you get away from city lights and see a clear sky, look north. He writes: "The Perseids never reach storm levels (thousands of meteors per hour)". The comet only orbits the sun every 133 years but when it does it leaves a trail of dust and small debris behind it.
