Portugal safe from contaminated eggs

As more and more countries are destroying fipronil contaminated eggs from the Netherlands, Euro commissioner for food safety Vytenis Andriukaitis wants a meeting of European Union ministers and food safety watchdogs to discuss the problem, public broadcaster NOS reports.

The European Commission said all had received eggs contaminated with the pesticide fipronil, adding that a meeting of EU ministers to discuss the scandal had been provisionally scheduled for September 26. However, food standards agencies are playing down the risks for anyone who has already eaten the tainted eggs.

Belgium and the Netherlands have for the past two weeks struggled to account for their failure to stop fipronil - a toxic insecticide banned for use on farm animals - entering barn eggs.

But it did say that all egg imports undergo "periodic analysis and inspection" at ministry food laboratories, and now meet all approved standards.

It also reached Luxembourg, while Britain said it had imported 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms linked to the scandal - far more than first thought. A number of eggs and egg-related products such as salads, quiches and sandwiches have already been withdrawn from major United Kingdom supermarkets.

MILLIONS of eggs have been removed from shelves across the continent over fears they could be contaminated with Fipronil.

It added that in the United Kingdom, the Dutch eggs were not sold as shell eggs but used in foods with many other ingredients - mostly sandwich fillings or other chilled foods. The eggs were seized Wednesday and the state agency said it would continue to monitor the situation.

It is "very unlikely" there is any risk to public health, the FSA said.

He said the eggs came from the Netherlands and were delivered by a German company. In Belgium, the agency of food security dates back to January 2017 in its controls farms have been blocked since the outbreak of the crisis, according to Danny coulier's, the boss of the organization, representing the poultry sector.

If consumed in large amounts, the insecticide is considered to be "quite hazardous" according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as it can severely affect people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

Dutch and Belgian authorities are carrying out raids as part of a criminal investigation into the illegal use of pesticide at poultry farms.

It has since emerged Belgian officials knew about the contamination in June, but did not make the information public. However, a Belgian supplier that is believed to have colluded with the Dutch company, is also under investigation.
