One shot dead in Kenya election protests, police say

Mike Sonko is the former Senator of Nairobi County

"In case of any disputes related to the official results delivered by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), we urge concerned parties to use the proper and legal channels provided by the Constitution of Kenya and the laws of Kenya", he said.

The Kenyan opposition is harshly criticizing the government amid clashes between police and rioters that have killed a dozen people since the results of a disputed election were announced late Friday. A mortuary official said nine bodies with gunshot wounds were brought to the Nairobi morgue from Mathare.

Kenyatta, who promised to create 1.3 million jobs, got 54% of the vote to secure a second five-year term; Odinga, who vowed to fight corruption, received 45%.

Kenyatta has appealed for unity and says he wants to work with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

One father said his nine-year-old daughter was killed by a stray bullet while on their third-floor balcony in Mathare.

"I was watching her play with her friends when she suddenly fell down", Mr Mokaya said.

However protests remained isolated today, with several hundred demonstrators engaging in running battles with police who quickly dispersed what Interior Minister Fred Matiangi referred to as "criminal elements".

In the southwestern town of Siaya, a police officer speaking on condition of anonymity said a man had been shot dead in protests, but "we have not managed to collect the body. because of resistance from protesters".

At least four persons were shot dead overnight during violent protests that were ongoing in Kenya on Saturday after incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta was re-elected in the presidential election, human rights organisations said.

As celebrations began in pro-government areas after Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor of the presidential election, supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga poured onto the streets in parts of Nairobi and Kisumu to protest the outcome.

Kenyan police say they have shot and killed two people during riots by opposition supporters after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor in national elections.

The deaths were confirmed by regional police commander Leonard Katana, AP reports.

In Nairobi slums loyal to Odinga, police opened fire to disperse protesters who blocked roads and set up burning barricades.

Odinga alleged that hackers infiltrated the election commission's computer system in favor of his opponent.
