Baby dolphin dies on Spain beach after tourists used it for selfies

A baby dolphin has died off the southern coast of Spain after it became separated from its mother and was found by tourists who took selfies with it instead of calling rescuers

It mirrors a case in Argentina previous year where a baby dolphin died after being passed around for people to take selfies with.

The organisation, which works to protect marine wildlife, said the massive crowd had caused the animal to become "extremely stressed".

'In their selfishness, all they want is to photograph it and touch it, even if the animal is suffering from stress'.

"It took us 15 minutes to arrive, but the animal was already dead", the group writes in its Facebook post, translated from Spanish. The death of the dolphin could be considered a criminal offense in Spain since it was manhandled by people while innocently living in its own natural habitat.

"Cetaceans are animals that are very susceptible to stress", Equinac continued.

The photographs showed children touching the animal, unintentionally covering the spiracle (blowhole).

They were criticised by a marine wildlife rescue group, which said the dolphin would have been "terrified" and may have been saved if beach-goers been quicker to alert authorities.

Pictures show bathers lifting the "frightened and weak" calf out of the water and stroking the dolphin - one child appears to inadvertently cover its blowhole with his hand.

It is understood the dolphin was initially stranded in the shallows when it was first discovered by the tourists.

It stated: "The animal was subjected to the curious who wanted to photograph and touch it". At one point, the dolphin was taken out of the water and used as a prop in photos.

The stranded creature was separated from its mother and spotted by a group of camera wielding tourists who snapped photos of it.

"Crowding round to touch them [dolphins] and take photos provokes shock and greatly accelerates cardio-respiratory failure".

They may have been able to get the animal into a zoo or animal rescue clinic and saved its life.

Although the organization said that the beachgoers are not responsible for separating the dolphin from its mother, they hastened its death by putting it in a stressful situation.

Social media users flooded the post with comments, with many criticizing the actions of those eager to get the ideal 'summer photo'.
