LeT commander Ayub Lelhari killed in Pulwama shootout

Top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Ayub Lelhari was on Wednesday gunned down by the security forces in an encounter that broke out between Army and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

A police official said a police and paramilitary CRPF men had set up a Naka at Banderpora, Quil area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district today. However, instead of stopping, a militant travelling in the vehicle fired towards the security personnel.

"Ayub Lelhari district commander LeT eliminated in #Pulwama".

A policeman was also injured in the brief shootout.

"Once they are out of their hideouts it becomes easier to track them and engage with them", the army authorities claimed, adding that the operations would not be possible in peak winters as terrorists remain inside hideouts.

Earlier on August 5, three militants of the Lashkar module were killed at the Jamia Mohalla Amargarh in Sopore. "It is yet another success in fight against militancy". The police said was involved in number of offences including grenade attacks on Army camp, police post and killing of Sarpanch. According to police Abu Ismail is the mastermind of July 10 terror attack on a bus carrying Amarnath pilgrims in Anantnag. He carried a bounty of Rs 15 lakhs. "It's a great success for the forces", Director General of Police, J&K, SP Vaid said.

He said Constable Reyaz Ahmad died at SKIMS hospital in Soura this afternoon.

One security personnel is also said to have received injuries in the gunbattle.

He said 43-year-old Singh had joined Army in 1994. He hailed from Village Haripur in Dehradun and is survived by his Asha Devi and two young daughters.
