'Impossible' for Grace Mugabe to have diplomatic passport

Claims The hotel confirmed guests had been asked to leave but would not confirm whether they were Mrs Mugabe

A 20-year-old model, Gabriella Engels, alleges that Grace Mugabe assaulted her for visiting two of the Mugabe sons in a Johannesburg hotel and has opened an assault case with police.

"Ms. Mugabe should have applied for diplomatic immunity before she came to our country, not after she finds herself facing criminal charges", said Zakhele Mbhele, a member of parliament for the Democratic Alliance.

A police police statement issued on Wednesday said Harare had sought diplomatic immunity for Mugabe - which if granted would exempt her from prosecution - but said she would be "processed through the legal system".

"Her attorneys and government of Zimbabwe representatives did arrive at the police station in Sandton for channels of communication".

"With an extension cord and used the plug to hit me", she explained with a picture showing a deep cut on her forehead. She launched herself at me, tried to grab my camera and then directed punches at my face.

Roux said Grace Mugabe should be subjected to normal processes and be investigated.

The police have declined to name Mugabe in the case as she has not yet appeared in court.

Police are said to be "on red alert".

She said the first lady's bodyguards stood by watching.

At the same time, Dirco has confirmed it's received correspondence from the Zimbabwean government invoking diplomatic immunity for the first lady.

"Now I can sleep a little bit more peacefully knowing that I have people.who can help me to get justice for my daughter", she told reporters.

Lawyers for 20-year-old Gabriella Engels threatened to go to court if South Africa's government grants Mugabe immunity, saying it can not be used to "escape prosecution from grave crimes".

Grace Mugabe's alleged assault victim has been offered money to drop charges against the Zimbabwean first lady, minority rights organisation AfriForum alleged on Thursday.

"She is not somebody who has been running away, from what she said".

But the police said on Wednesday that she remained in the country, though she had failed to show up to receive a "warning statement" about the case on Tuesday, The Associated Press said.
