'A genius comedian': Hollywood says goodbye to Jerry Lewis

The Day The Clown Cried Trending On Twitter

His publicist confirmed that Lewis died in his home at about 9:15 a.m. Sunday morning.

The actor also made many contributions to the film industry.

In 2012, Lewis was rushed to a NY hospital after collapsing from low blood sugar.

Lewis had been touring Australia to raise money for the country's Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, which is separate from the American association, where he served as president. By chance, he met Dean Martin, and the struggling singer teamed-up with Lewis to become the hottest show in NY, eventually going to Hollywood to make hit movies like "Pardners" and "That's My Boy".

His 10-year partnership with Martin saw them star in 16 films and achieve huge box office success.

"Seeing a woman project the kind of aggression that you have to project as a comic just rubs me wrong", Lewis said in 2014 in comments carried by The Wrap.

Lewis starred in films such as the original 1963 version of The Nutty Professor, The Bellboy and Cinderfella. He is survived by Pitnick and six of his seven children (his son Joseph Lewis died in 2009 from a narcotics overdose). In a 2016 Inside Edition clip promoting Max Rose, Lewis broke down into tears as he mused on the inevitability of death and his fear of leaving his loved ones behind. Though he is mostly known for his slapstick comedy, the iconic star is also known as a humanitarian.

Talk show host Larry King on Twitter: "Jerry lived to make the world laugh, and laugh we did for decades". As previously reported, Lewis had been in a state of failing health for some time.

Where he not only starred in his own films, he also wrote, produced, and directed numerous movies and shows he acted in.

Lewis was born in New Jersey and originally came into the spotlight as part of a double act with singer Dean Martin. "He was, truly, one of our greats".

He started performing on stage at the age of five alongside his parents.

"Martin and Lewis are genial boys, and some of their knockabout clowning is in the classic tradition of good buffoons", the paper wrote in 1952.
