Trump's response to Charlottesville just got brutal reviews

Robinson: GOP leaders must denounce Trump

President Donald Trump said the media misrepresented his condemnation of white supremacists last week, but he did not address the controversial elements of his remarks blaming all sides for violence at a far-right rally in Charlottesville.

Ford of Phoenix, Arizona, said Confederate monuments like the statue of Robert E. Lee that partly sparked protests in Charlottesville don't offend her personally, but that she "can see how they trigger some people".

In a press conference at Trump Tower last Tuesday, the fake president taunted the "fake news" reporters and doubled down on his contention that anti-fascist demonstrators were as complicit as the fascists themselves for the violence in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend that left one young woman dead and many more injured.

"I hit 'em with neo-Nazi, I hit 'em with everything. KKK?" "We're done with the "Well, maybe it won't be so bad and we should take what we can get" phase of this administration", he wrote, apparently referring to Republicans who are holding their noses while hoping for tax cuts and more right-wing Supreme Court justices. "What are we going to take away next?" "They're trying to take away our history", Trump said.

Then, attacking Flake, Trump said: "Nobody wants me to talk about him".

Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said the events in Charlottesville, and Trump's comments about them, have fueled a perception in America that racial tensions are on the rise.

"If we don't, the Republicans will never get anything passed. I really believe that".

President Donald Trump retreated to one of his private golf courses Wednesday night amid the uproar over his sympathetic words for neo-Nazis and white nationalists. To get a number this low, you need virtual unanimity across all groups: only 6% of Republicans, 4% of people over 65, 3% of whites and 3% of independents said white supremacists were discouraged by Trump's behavior and comments.

"I think we'll probably end up terminating NAFTA at some point", Trump said. "And now, we haven't mentioned any names, so now, everybody's happy".

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who served both Republican and Democratic presidents from John Kennedy to Barack Obama, said on CNN that he found the speech "downright scary and disturbing." Still angry about how his initial statement was covered, he told the crowd that he wanted to "show you how damned dishonest these people are".

But when he stopped in Yuma on Tuesday, Trump did not leave the grounds of the Marine base where he landed.

Apart from the cultural and political rhetoric that will reverberate for days after the wild rally, Trump also appeared to make several policy interventions that will alarm USA partners and could send economic shockwaves around the world.

The administration has praised the Yuma border patrol sector for the miles of secure fencing, constructed over the past decade, which they say has curtailed the flow of undocumented immigrants crossing the border illegally.

Outside the Phoenix Convention Center where the President spoke, police used gas canisters to disperse a crowd of anti-Trump protestors. Trump promised to build his wall; he said that he would be willing to provoke a government shutdown to do it.
