Sonic Mania's PC Release Is Running Into Big DRM Problems

Sonic Mania on Steam requires an internet connection to play

According to Eurogamer, the positive reviews soon turned to a flood of "Not Recommended" comments with complaints Sonic Mania is an always-online game, that it ships with what is basically malware, and claims that the two week delay for the PC version was simply to add DRM to the game.

What is doubly annoying to the critics of this practice is that the Steam page for the game never listed that the DRM would be featured in the product, nor that the game would require a constant online connection until after the game's launch, which has understandably frustrated some players.

The #sonicmaniapc offline play bug has now been patched. The dev also acknowledges issues with the game's previously unannounced Denuvo DRM.

Still, this is a pain in the backside, and shouldn't be necessary for a ye olde styled 16 bit platformer with no essential online components. Sega immediately issued an update via Steam saying it was aware of the error. Now once that pesky DRM is out of the way, the PC version of the game should be on track to impress just as the console versions have.

Players are still hoping to crack Denuvo to play it offline. Denuvo is utter shit and we don't want it on our systems.

Steam's pre-sale charts were touching the top of charts earlier this month and Denuvo was not mentioned in this store page.

Contrary to first appearances, it seems that the problem was not DRM-related, with Sega pointing the blame to a "problem within the game's code" which was preventing the game from launching while in offline mode. "This stuff should be made public before we even get to purchase it", a third user wrote.

Sega have released an official statement regarding the situation over on the game's news section on Steam.

It's worth nothing that the Sonic Team was not responsible for the inclusion of this anti-tamper tech to the PC version of Sonic Mania.

Fans responded in kind by expressing their opinions on social media and review-bombing the Sonic Mania Steam listing, slamming the game with negative reviews in an effort to get Sega to take action.
