United Nations chief urges restraint by Myanmar forces to avoid 'catastrophe'

21 dead after Rohingya boats capsized in Naf

The statement said 370 of the dead were insurgents, whom it described as terrorists.

The latest round of violence erupted last Friday when Rohingya militants swarmed remote police posts, killing 15 officials and burning villages.

The Rohingyas, who came to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar, have settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

A series of coordinated attacks by Rohingya insurgents on Myanmar security forces in the north of Myanmar's Rakhine State triggered a crackdown by Myanmar forces that has sent a stream of Rohingya villagers fleeing to Bangladesh.

Thousands more people are thought to be trapped in an unoccupied zone between the countries.

Omar said 64 young Rohingya men had enlisted in his unit over a two-day period, walking from squalid camps in Bangladesh to join the fight.

It is the bloodiest chapter yet in a bitter five-year crisis that has torn apart Rakhine state along ethnic and religious lines, displaced the Rohingya in huge numbers and heaped worldwide condemnation on Myanmar's army and the government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Rakhine Buddhists, feeling unsafe after the upsurge in fighting, are moving south to the state's capital, Sittwe, where Buddhists are a majority and have greater security.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard and Bangladesh Police in a combined operation rescued the bodies early yesterday after Subrang Union Parishad Member Nurul Amin informed them about the accident.

In the riots that followed, dozens of people were killed and some 90,000 Rohingya fled into Bangladesh.

The foreign minister has been communicating with Myanmar's national security advisor U Thaung Tun and Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali to discuss the escalating violence, the increasing number of refugees from the conflict area and necessary steps that have to be taken to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. "But if they wanted attention, they're going to get it". "It's mostly women and children".

The government of Myanmar denies that the Rohingya are citizens, instead calling them illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

The plight of the Rohingya made worldwide headlines in 2015 when thousands of Rohingya were left stranded on boats in southeast Asia with no food or water because no country was willing to welcome them. "We ran away so they couldn't find us", said Samira, 19, a survivor from one of the boats, as the monsoon wind and rain blew off the sea to soak her bright orange hijab.

A further 20,000 Rohingya have massed along the Bangladeshi frontier, the United Nations added in a statement late Thursday, but are barred from entry as they run from burning villages and Myanmar army operations.

Reuters news agency reported on Friday that around 38,000 people were estimated to have crossed over.

Aid workers giving emergency shelter and food in Bangladesh said the refugees were in a "very desperate condition".

"They mercilessly slaughtered men, women and children", she told AFP by telephone from Cox s Bazar in Bangladesh where she has fled. On Friday thousands walked through the slushy paddy fields, many with just the clothes on their backs.

It has also sought a direction that Rohingyas be provided "basic amenities to ensure that they can live in human conditions as required by global law".

Lee decried the failure of authorities in Myanmar to help Rohingya Muslims evacuate to safer locations.
