PM Narendra Modi Myanmar Visit LIVE: In Promise Of 'Act East', PM Begins Burma Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday presented Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi a special reproduction of the original research proposal that she had submitted for fellowship at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study at Shimla in May 1986.

"Prime Minister Modi and Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi meet in Myanmar, discuss further cementing of India-Myanmar relations", PMO said in a tweet.

The statement carried by the state media, said Suu Kyi told Erdogan that her government had "already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible".

India and Myanmar were also looking at strengthening existing cooperation in areas of security and counter-terrorism, trade and investment, infrastructure and energy, and culture, Modi had said ahead of his visit. "We share your concerns on the extremist violence in Rakhine province and especially the death of security personnel and the loss of innocent lives".

The government has said it would deport all Rohingyas living in India illegally but the Supreme Court has said that it will hear on September 11 a plea seeking a direction to the central government not to deport about 40,000 such refugees back to Myanmar.

Indian PM Modi says he looks forward to visit as he flies in to Myanmar

Yangon, Sep 6 Prime Minister Narendra Modi today proposed setting up of an Indian National Army (INA) memorial in Myanmar to commemorate the sacrifices of those who fought against the British rule.

India too has invested heavily in connectivity projects through Myanmar - such as the Kaladan multi-modal project that involves developing a port, an inland waterways terminal and a road. He had visited the country in 2014 to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)-India summit. Several other agreements were also signed between the two countries.

Modi landed in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's capital, on Tuesday evening, and met the country's President Htin Kyaw, who enjoys a largely ceremonial position in the current administration. Myanmar also vowed not to allow any insurgent group to utilise its soil to undertake hostile acts against India, the statement said.

Some Western critics have suggested the Nobel Peace Prize she won in 1991 as a champion of democracy be revoked.
