UN Officially Accuses Assad Government in Using Sarin in Khan Sheikhoun

Syrian troops have been battling against Islamic State

At least 83 people, a third of them children, were killed and almost 300 wounded in the attack on Khan Sheikhun, a town in the opposition-held northern province of Idlib, it said. These attacks constitute clear violations of global humanitarian law and the Convention on Chemical Weapons, the report notes, which the Syrian Arab Republic ratified in 2013 following a previous sarin attack.

The statement presented to the United Nations in Geneva added that the act was considered a "war crime".

President Assad's forces were guilty of the attack.

The latest report by the Commission of Inquiry on Syria offers among the strongest evidence yet of allegations that Assad's forces conducted the April 4 attack on Khan Sheikhoun in rebel-held Idlib province in which dozens of people were killed.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces have used chemical weapons more than two dozen times during Syria's civil war, including in a deadly attack in April, UN war crimes investigators say.

"Government forces continued the pattern of using chemical weapons against civilians in opposition-held areas".

"It underscores once more how Syrian men, women, and children throughout the country remain the primary victims of violence perpetrated by the pro-Government forces, anti-Government armed groups, terrorist organisations and their affiliates", Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Chair of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told a press conference in Geneva, launching the report. The report identified them as Soviet-made S-5M rockets, used by the Syrian air force.

October 21, 2016: The UN-led Joint Investigative Mechanism says that of nine alleged chemical attacks it is examining, three can be attributed to the Syrian government and one to ISIS jihadists.

That attack led U.S. President Donald Trump to launch the first U.S. air strikes on a Syrian air base.

The Syrian regime has continued to use sarin and chlorine gas to deadly effect throughout the war despite former USA president Barack Obama describing their use as a "red line" in 2012, intimating the likely use of military action.

The latest report by the Commission of Inquiry on Syria also said United States forces failed to take "all feasible precautions" to protect civilians in attacking alleged terrorists in Aleppo in March, destroying part of a mosque complex.

The report is the 14th by the commission and covers events from March to early July, based on interviews with Syrians, satellite images and examinations of photos and videos.

The Assad regime has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons.
