Google challenges record European antitrust fine in court

Google submits an appeal for its €2.4B fine by the EU

Google launched an appeal against 2.4-billion fine imposed by European anti-trust authorities which imposed a fine on the tech giant accusing it of favouring its online shopping centres in search results.

The EU hit Google with the record fine in June - the previous record had been a fine against chipmaker Intel in 2009 - and gave the company 90 days to comply or face further fines.

The owner of the world's largest search engine said it filed its appeal on Monday at the EU's General Court, based in Luxembourg.

Google is still obliged to pay up despite the legal challenge, but it can put the money in a locked account until the court reaches a decision.

Meanwhile, its rivals saw a downturn - and some saw visitor numbers plummet by 85%.

The EC has ordered Google to stop its anti-competitive behaviour by 28 September, or risk penalty payments of as much as 5 percent of Alphabet's average daily worldwide turnover.

Lobby group FairSearch, whose members include Google rivals such as British shopping comparison site Foundem and U.S.travel site TripAdvisor, said the European Union decision was sound.

Google has chose to appeal the record-breaking fine imposed on it by the European Union's highest antitrust authority in July.

The EU fined the internet giant for abusing its dominance in Europe to position its own shopping comparison service at the top of Google search results.

The EU Court of Justice (ECJ) ordered a lower tribunal last week to re-examine US chipmaker Intel's appeal against a 1.06 billion euro fine, a rare setback for the Commission. "And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation".
