Additional Nuclear Inspectors Sent to Florida Power Plants in Hurricane Irma's Path

Irma to Test Florida Utility's $3 Billion of Power-Grid Upgrades

Florida's second biggest power company, Duke, serving the northern and central parts of the state, said it still had about 1.2 million outages Tuesday morning, according to the company's website, while Duke's outages in North and SC climbed to about 160,000.

In all, nearly 1.8 million FPL homes and businesses had lost power.

FPL said on Wednesday it had provided power to some parts of a nursing home where people died after the facility lost electricity during Irma and that the home was not on a list "critical facilities" prioritized for emergency power restoration. At 1 pm EDT, almost 1.6 million were without power while about 200,000 had electricity restored mostly by automated devices, FPL said.

Some Florida utilities, including FPL, had warned customers it could take weeks to restore power in the hardest hit areas.

Irma hit southwestern Florida on Sunday morning as a risky Category 4 storm, the second-highest level on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

Georgia reported more than 570,000 homes and businesses without electricity, and there were 80,000 in SC. That number includes workers from affected companies, mutual assistance crews from other utilities, contractors and other support personnel, he said.

Florida outages for Duke, the state's second biggest power company serving the northern and central parts of the state, remained at about 1.2 million overnight, according to the company's website, while Duke's outages in North and SC climbed to about 160,000. It gradually weakened to a tropical storm on Monday and a post-tropical cyclone by Tuesday morning.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said on Friday it has dispatched additional inspectors to the Turkey Point and St. Lucie nuclear plants in Florida in preparation for the effects of Hurricane Irma on those sites.

Tampa Bay residents without power dropped from about 1.15 million on Monday to a little over 920,000 as of Tuesday morning.
